Stu Hull
I am a photographic artist portraying themes of voice, ownership, nature, age and the progression of time in my work. I use both digital and medium-format film cameras to create autobiographical self-portraits and portraits of others.
I use props in my work to respond to the themes, selecting a particular colour scheme or lighting style to unify each particular body of work. I am inspired by the strong contrast of light and dark in chiaroscuro paintings, and allegorical still life paintings, and how this can be represented using the square dimensions of medium-format photography which have been re-popularised by social media. I create atmospheric and subdued portraits with a core philosophy of not retouching skin to ensure the closeness of the photographed sitter to the moment in time the photograph is taken.
